As a village within the centre of London, Highgate is located at the top of a steep hill, offering expansive views of the surrounding areas. This includes the beautiful Hampstead heath and other historic sites & buildings. With the historic nature of this area in mind, and the modern requirements of the residents, we set out to create a home that met all of the needs of this art collector client.
The home: A large 5-bedroomed semi-detached property.
The challenge: The client requested a living room extension to create an open, light-filled living/kitchen area. This required the creation of a large extension that included 4-metre-high glass doors that wrapped round the entire zinc-clad structure. The aim was to allow the client to get the maximum amount of light into the new extension and through into the rest of the home – to connect between the outdoors and the interior of the house.
The original brief was designed to help create a space where the client could display their artwork, while living a more contemporary lifestyle with an open plan living and kitchen area.
Access to the garden was also important and we established this through the creation of the extension that opened onto the garden, and a matching doorway from the kitchen area. During the work, the client asked us to remove the chimney breast in the living room to establish a more contemporary uniform look to the room. At all stages we worked closely with the client to ensure the lighting was ideal for the display of their art works.
The client was especially happy with the new flow to the home and the way that the large windows now allowed full views of the garden beyond.
They were pleased that they could take advantage of the flexible way that we work to allow for changes during the construction and the way in which the work was carried out with minimum fuss. The transformation of this property has resulted in a home that now felt lighter, brighter and contemporary, bringing the outdoors into the house.
