RESIDENTIAL REBURBISHMENT

Great Cumberland Place, London

Great Cumberland Place is in the City of Westminster, London and runs from Oxford Street at Marble Arch to George Street.

The street has been home to some notable residents including United States Ambassadors, the Lord Bishop of Norwich and the explorer James Theodore Bent.

The Brief

The home: A three bedroom apartment set in a listed building in one of London’s most sought after residential areas.

The challenge: Our clients wanted some fundamental changes to this property in order to modernize it including raising the ceilings to achieve a floor to ceiling height of 4 metres. This, in turn, presented another significant challenge of replacing 11 sash windows through the property. In addition, the client wanted a ‘state of the art’ smart home with everything controlled via Control 4/ Lutron software. The property was further enhanced with bespoke wrap-around joinery including full height bespoke doors with concealed hinges and a parquet floor throughout that had to conform to strict sound proofing standards.

Our Work

We began by securing permission to move the communal heating pipes, in order to create the new and impressive high ceilings with an open plan feel.

We commissioned bespoke automated Lutron blinds that closed from bottom and could be controlled remotely, allowing the client full control over light and privacy.

Specialist joiners were engaged to design and build the bespoke herringbone floor and doors while a bespoke bed was commissioned that accommodated an under-bed TV.

A crane was required to lift another element of the project into place through one of the windows. Due to its size and weight, this bespoke sliding door could not be installed by any other means and it needed 10 specialist fitters to complete the job.

The wiring of the property presented another challenge. Audio visual specialists and electricians were engaged to ensure that many aspects of the property including the bio-ethanol fire could be controlled using the ‘control 4’ and KNX systems.

The Result

This property has been transformed from a dark and dated apartment into a light, modern and elegant home that combines the classic elements of bespoke joinery with the ultra modern elements of computer controlled blinds, heating and entertainment.

The result is a stunning living space in the heart of London.
